A total of 1,114 student-athletes have been named to the 2003-04 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade point averages of 3.0 or higher it was announced July 1 by Chris Monasch, Commissioner of America East Conference. A total of 472 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the most recent athletic season.
The student-athletes were members of teams in the 16 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track and field, softball and baseball.
Binghamton University had the most representatives named to the Academic Honor Roll as 155 Bearcat student-athletes were selected. University of Maine and University of New Hampshire (125 each), University of Vermont (123), UMBC (115), Boston University (114), Stony Brook University (107), University at Albany (96), University of Hartford (84) and Northeastern University (53) followed. Quinnipiac University, an associate member in men's lacrosse, had 17 student-athletes named in that sport.
Maine had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 125 of its 213 student-athletes (58.7 percent) in winter and spring sports received that distinction. New Hampshire (53.2 percent), Binghamton (52.3) and Hartford (51.2) were other schools with more than half their student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll.
Binghamton also led all institutions with 71 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Maine (66), Vermont (59), New Hampshire (52), UMBC (49), Albany and Boston University (39 each), Hartford (38) and Stony Brook (37) were others well represented by student-athletes with grade-point averages at 3.5 or better.
Institutional sport leaders were: men's basketball, Hartford (8); women's basketball, Northeastern (10); men's swimming and diving, Binghamton (15); women's swimming and diving, Binghamton (23); men's indoor and outdoor track and field, Maine and New Hampshire (25 each); women's indoor and outdoor track and field, New Hampshire (48); men's golf, Binghamton (4); women's golf, Albany (6); men's tennis, Stony Brook (8); women's tennis, Stony Brook and Vermont (8 each); men's lacrosse, Quinnipiac and Vermont (17 each); women's lacrosse, UMBC (13); softball, Maine (18); and baseball, Binghamton (18).
Some of the top student-athletes in America East named to the Academic Honor Roll include Taylor Coppenrath of Vermont, the America East Men's Basketball Player of the Year; Heather Ernest of Maine, the America East Women's Basketball Player of the Year; Brad Green of UMBC and Victor Paguia of Boston University, the Most Outstanding Men's Swimmer and Diver, respectively, at the America East Swimming and Diving Championship; Rory Quiller of Binghamton, the Most Outstanding Men's Field Performer at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championship; Kristal Kostiew of Vermont, the Most Outstanding Women's Field Performer at both the America East Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships; Diane Onofry of Albany, the medalist at the America East Women's Golf Championship; Dan Hanegby of Binghamton and Elena de Mendoza of Boston University, the Most Outstanding Men's and Women's Performers, respectively, at the America East Tennis Championships; Kevin McKeown of Binghamton, the America East Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year; Jess Burnap of New Hampshire, the America East Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year; and Andee Lindgren of Albany, Jenna Merchant of Maine and Nikki Thompson of Hartford, the America East Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, respectively, in softball.
