Dieckfoss Finishes 6th, Northover 12th at NCAA Track and Field Championships

Boston University's Jochen Dieckfoss finished sixth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and Northeastern's Zara Northover was 12th in the women's shot put at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Austin, Texas. They were two of six America East athletes to compete at the championship.
Results

Dieckfoss, who ran 8:49.04 in the preliminary, ran 8:55.02 in the final Saturday. Jordan Desilets of Eastern Michigan was the champion in 8:42.64.

Northover, who recorded a school-record 16.48 meters (54-01.00) in the preliminary, was 12th in the women's shot put with a distance of 16.04 meters (52-07.50). Laura Gerraughty of North Carolina won the event with 18.26 meters (59-11.00).

Other America East competitors were Derek Anderson of Northeastern, who earned All-America status after narrowly missing the final in the men's shot put, Teresa Covert of Albany who competed in the 100-meter hurdles, Brandon Howlett of Albany, who was entered in the men's discus and Laura Chmielewski of Northeastern in the women's pole vault.

Anderson, who fouled on his first two attempts, recorded a distance of 18.31 meters (60-01.00) to finish 13th. The top 12 advanced to the finals. Anderson was eighth among American finishers in the event, thus earning All-America honors. He also finished 22nd ni the discus with a distance of 52.74 meters (173-00.00). Hannes Hopley of Southern Methodist was the winner (62.01, 203-05.00).

Covert of Albany ran 13.30 in the 100-meter hurdles and failed to qualify for the final in that event.

Brandon Howlett of Albany finished 21st in the qualifying in the men's discus with a distance of 53.04 meters (174-00).

Laura Chmielewski of Northeastern failed to clear the opening height of 3.75 meters in the women's pole vault.
