Dieckfoss, Northover Advance to NCAA Track Finals

Boston University's Jochen Dieckfoss and Northeastern's Zara Northover advanced to the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Austin, Texas. Dieckfoss reached the finals after finishing third in the preliminaries of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Northover was eighth in the women's shot put.

Dieckfoss, who ran 8:49.04, is scheduled to run in the final Saturday at 8:25 p.m. ET. Aaron Fisher of Ohio State ran the top time (8:46.99) in the preliminary.

Northover recorded a distance of 16.48 meters (54-01.00) on her third attempt to set a school record. Becky Breish of Nebraska was the top qualifier at 17.86 meters (58-07.25). The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.

Derek Anderson of Northeastern narrowly missed the final in the men's shot put. Anderson, who fouled on his first two attempts, recorded a distance of 18.31 meters (60-01.00) to finish 13th. The top 12 advance to the finals.

Teresa Covert of Albany ran 13.30 in the 100-meter hurdles and failed to qualify in that event.

Brandon Howlett of Albany finished 21st in the qualifying in the men's discus with a distance of 53.04 meters (174-00).

Laura Chmielewski of Northeastern failed to clear the opening height of 3.75 meters in the women's pole vault.
