Albany’s Kirt Zimniewicz (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal/Alfred State) has been named America East Player of the Week for baseball, while Jon Lewis (Queens, N.Y./Francis Lewis) of Stony Brook and Vermont’s Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass./Salisbury) have been honored as Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively. The awards were announced Monday (May 3).
Zimniewicz was 7-for-11 at the plate (.636) during the Great Danes’ three-game weekend series versus Binghamton. The senior second baseman knocked in four runs, including two home runs, and also scored five times against the Bearcats, while extending his team-high 17-game hitting streak with a two-run homer in the first inning of the Great Danes’ 6-5 victory on Sunday. On the week, Zimniewicz hit .643 with a 1.071 slugging percentage.
Lewis struck out a career-high 13 batters without allowing just one walk in a seven inning complete game victory over Hartford. The junior fanned 13 of the 28 batters he faced and had at least one strikeout in every inning, striking out the side in the second and to close out the game in the seventh. With his performance he moved into second place on Stony Brook’s all-time strikeout list with 209 career K’s and third on the wins list with 17 career victories.
Magrass had a great week at the plate with team-highs of a .474 average, a .947 slugging and eight RBI as four of his nine hits went for extra bases. In a three game series with Maine, he hit two homers and had five RBI. Magrass nearly hit for the cycle with a double, triple and homer in four at bats in the second game versus Maine. He currently leads the Catamounts with 39 RBI, a new Vermont freshman record.
