America East Athletes Compete at ECAC/IC4A Championships

America East athletes competed at the ECAC and IC4A Championships at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. Derek Anderson (Wrentham, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) of Northeastern University won two field events and Jochen Dieckfoss (Tuebingen, Germany/Geschwister-Scholl- Schule) of Boston University won the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the conference competitors.

Anderson garnered top accolades as he won the shot put with a toss of 59’ 11.75” and the discus with a hurl of 176’ 10”. This season Anderson has broken the Northeastern records in the shot put and discus and has collected titles in each event in both the America East and New England championships. Dieckfoss won the steeplechase with a time of 8:42.14. The victory marks the third-straight year that he has won the event at the IC4A Championships.

Other top men’s finishers for Northeastern were Peter Jasmin (Middletown, N.Y./Pinebush), who finished eighth in the 110 hurdles (14.55) and the 4x100 relay team (41.06), which grabbed second-place points. For the Terriers, Pete Maitland (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) finished 20th in the javelin (181’ 4”) and the 4x400 relay team (3:12.35) took fourth overall.

Rounding out the top men’s finishers were Naron Stewart (Kingston, Jamaica/Kingston College) and Brandon Howlett (New Haven Conn./Hillhouse) from University at Albany. Stewart and Howlett each finished fourth in the high jump (6’ 9”) and discus (174’ 3”), respectively. For Binghamton University, Mike Stewart (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) finished sixth in the 400 hurdles (52.88) and Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y./James I. Oneill) finished sixth in the pole vault (16’ .75”) to lead the Bearcats, while Dale Summerville (Waiuku, New Zealand/King's College) led Stony Brook University with a 10th-place finish in the 5,000 (14:28.32). Anthony Truax (Dover, N.H./Dover) led University of New Hampshire with a 12th-place showing in the steeplechase (9:13.70), while David Cusano (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) was the top competitor for University of Maine, finishing 23rd in the javelin (167’ 10”).

The Northeastern women turned in strong performances at the ECAC Championship. The Huskies sported eight top-10 finishes, including three second-place finishes. Leading the way for Northeastern was Ahndraea Allen (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park), Laura Chmielewski (Monmouth, N.J./South Brunswick/Rutgers) and Zara Northover (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) who each grabbed second-place medals in the 400 (53.02), pole vault (12’ 11.5”) and shot put (52’ 3.25”) respectively.

Other top women’s finishers included Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt./Milton) and Lesley Read (Dover, N.H./Dover) of New Hampshire who claimed second-place honors in the 10,000 (35:20.56) and steeplechase (10:28.21) respectively to lead the Wildcats. Teresa Covert (Susquehanna, Pa./Susquehanna) of Albany also claimed second-place points, turning in a time of 13.60 in the 100 hurdles. Kristal Kostiew (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown) of University of Vermont scored fourth-place points in the hammer throw (189’ 5”) and seventh-place points in the discus (145’ 5”) to lead the Catamounts.

Rounding out the women’s competition was Erica Angell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill), who led the Binghamton performers with a sixth-place finish in the 10,000 (36:00.32) along with Julia Nazzer (Wanganuii, New Zealand) of Boston University who crossed the finish line in 10th place in the steeplechase (10:45.36). Leading Maine was Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine/Winslow) with a ninth-place overall finish in the heptathlon. Stony Brook’s Jackie Nunez (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Suffolk CC) compiled a time of 9:46.61 in the 3,000, which was good enough for ninth-place.

America East track and field athletes who have qualified will next compete at the NCAA Regional Championships on May 27-29 in Gainsville, Fla.
