Maine’s Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass./Catholic Memorial) has been named America East baseball's Player of the Week, while Northeastern senior Jordan Thomson (Ottawa, Ontario/Vaughn Road) receives Pitcher of the Week honors. Vermont's Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass./Salisbury) and Steve Wyland (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) of Albany share Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards were announced Monday (May 17).
Hough led the Black Bears to two victories over America East’s previously top-ranked squad, Albany. The sophomore had a hit in every game and scored at least one run in all three games. Hough did it all for the Black Bears as he also stole three bases, including two in Maine’s 7-3 win, and threw out an Albany runner at the plate from right field.
Thomson pitched a one-hit shutout, with 13 strikeouts, to lead NU to a 2-0 win over Hartford. Thomson came a bunt-single away from pitching the first no-hitter of his collegiate career. He allowed just three men to reach base, all in different innings, on the bunt-single, a walk and an error. Thomson hasn’t given up a run in 20-straight innings, is 8-2 with a 1.33 ERA, and has a 6-0 record with a 0.39 ERA in league action. He is Northeastern’s all-time leader in career wins (24) and strikeouts (232).
Magrass hit .417 (5-for-12) on the week as he helped keep Vermont in the playoff hunt, taking two-of-three against Binghamton. He also becames UVM’s single season RBI leader as he now has 43 during his freshman campaign. Wyland went 5-for-11, including a game-winning hit, in the weekend series versus Maine. He went 3-for-4 and drove in both runs in his team’s, 2-1, victory in game one against the Black Bears. He lined a two-out RBI single to center field in the top of the ninth to put the Great Danes ahead 2-1.
