Maine Wins Softball Championship

Sarah Bennis pitched a two-hit complete-game and Lauren Dulkis scored on a sacrifice fly ot break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning as Maine defeated Boston University, 2-1 at Kessock Field, to win the America East Softball Championship. The fourth-seeded Black Bears, 28-21, become the lowest seeded team to win the title in the 13-year history of the championship.

Maine trailed 1-0 when all-championship choice Jess Brady led off the sixth inning with a double. Dulkis, the championship’s Most Outstanding Player, followed with a single, which was misplayed by the left fielder allowing Brady to score and Dulkis to advance all the way to third. Brittany Cheney then scored Dulkis with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Two-time defending conference champion Boston University, 26-32, had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Abbey Pauley walked, stole second and scored when DeKenya Williams’ single was misplayed by the left fielder.

Bennis, an all-championship choice, limited the Terriers to just one base runner the rest of the way, a one-out single by Pauley in the third inning. The right-hander allowed one unearned run while striking out five and walking one in improving to 10-9.

Brittany Detwiler, who allowed two unearned runs of five hits in 5.2 innings, fell to 5-13. Ashlee Freeman, who had helped Boston University force the deciding game with a complete-game in a 3-2 win earlier in the day, pitched 1.1 innings of perfect relief.

Dulkis, Brady, Bennis and Pauley were joined on the all-championship team by Molly McKinney of Maine, Jamie Haas and Freeman of Boston University, Kristen Brust and Angela Andews of Stony Brook and Andee Lindgren and Ashley Rios of Albany.

Maine, which earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Softball Championship, awaits the pairings for the 64-field team Sunday night. It will be the Black Bears second NCAA appearance. Current head coach Deb Smith, the America East Player of the Year in 1994, led the Black Bears to the NCAA Championship that year.

The Terriers scored single runs in the first, third and seventh innings and Freeman scattered 11 hits in the 3-2 win in the first game with Maine in the winner’s bracket.

The Terriers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Pauley led off with a walk and scored when Haas doubled to left field. Boston University increased the lead in the third inning thanks to control problems from Maine starter Jenna Merchant, who walked six while giving up two runs in 2.2 innings. Merchant walked five in the inning, including a pass to Erin McDonald which scored Haas. The inning could have been worse for Maine had Emily Varga not been caught stealing.

Maine cut into the lead in the sixth inning when McKinney doubled with one out, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Merchant. Lindsey Tibbetts followed with a single and and pinch-hitter Nicole Taylor was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But Freeman ended the threat with a strikeout of Sara Asadoorian.

The Terriers added what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Williams walked, stole second and scored when the catcher’s throw sailed into center field and past the center fielder, allowing Williams to circle the bases.

Brady, who was four-for-four in the game, led off the bottom of the seventh for Maine with a triple and after a popout, scored on a sacrifice fly by Cheney. McKinney then singled and Amy Kuhl walked, but Freeman got Merchant to pop to third to end the game.

Freeman struck out one and walked one while improving to 18-13. Merchant fell to 10-5. Bennis pitched 4.1 innings for Maine, allowing an unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
