Northeastern Men and Women Lead Outdoor Championships

The Northeastern University women and Northeastern men lead after day one of the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Northeastern’s Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass.
Day 1 Results

The Northeastern women finished day one with 67 points, while University of New Hampshire finished in second with 49.5 and University of Maine followed in third with 43. University at Albany (33), Binghamton University (30.5), Boston University (23), University of Vermont (18), Stony Brook University (6), University of Maryland, Baltimore County (3), and Hartford (0) rounded out the women’s field.

The Northeastern men amassed 66 points on the day and were followed by New Hampshire (47), Albany (30), Binghamton (24), Boston University (24), UMBC (21), Maine (17), Stony Brook (5) and Hartford (0).

The Northeastern women were led by Laura Chmielewski (Monmouth, N.J./South Brunswick/Rutgers), who captured first in the pole vault by setting a new America East Championship record with her NCAA regional-qualifying vault of 13’ 1.5”. Other Husky highlights included Nicole Parker (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and Janel Kozlowski (Woodstock, Conn./Woodstock Academy), who finished second (5’ 8”) and third (5’ 6”), respectively, in the high jump, and Aquila Williams-Judge (Boston, Mass./Scituate/Wheaton) and Shanae Henry (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) who grabbed second (18’ 6.5”) and third-place (18’ .5”) points, respectively, in the long jump.

Other women’s winners during the day one events included Lesley Read (Dover, N.H./Dover) of New Hampshire, who set a new America East record with an NCAA regional-qualifying time of 10:41.48 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Fellow Wildcat Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt./Milton) also garnered first-place honors, winning the 10,000 (36.15.16). Claire Poliquin (N. Vancouver, B.C./Handsworth) of Maine soared 5’ 8” in the high jump, setting a new America East record and qualifying for the NCAA regionals. Teresa Covert (Susquehanna, Pa./Susquehanna) of Albany, Kristal Kostiew (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown) of Vermont, and Katie Chen (Topsfield, Mass./Topsfield) of Boston University were also individual winners, claiming gold medals in the long jump (19’ 3.5”), hammer throw (180’ 2”) and javelin (131’ 9”) respectively.

Leading the way for the Northeastern men was Isaiah Grigg (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), who won the long jump with a leap of 23’ 10.75”, along with teammate Steve Langton (Melrose, Mass./St. John's) who finished second (23’ 1.25”). The Huskies also racked up points in the pole vault as Ryan Cahill (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), Aaron Hill (Wheeler, Texas/Bishop T.K. Gorman) and Michael Couch (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) finished second (15’ 7”), third (15’ 7”) and fifth (15’ 1”) respectively.

Other men’s highlights included Eric Opuana (Kaduna, Nigeria/Army Day Secondary) of Albany who won the hammer throw with an NCAA regional-qualifying toss of (183’ 9”). Jochen Dieckfoss (Tuebingen, Germany/Geschwister-Scholl- Schule) of Boston University defeated all in the 3,000 steeplechase (8:57.14), while fellow Terrier Peter Maitland (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) claimed top honors in the javelin (184’ 3”). Nathan Dixon (Patuxent, Md./Patuxent) of UMBC won the pole vault (15’ 7”) and Tim Perry (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) of New Hampshire grabbed top honors in the 10,000 (31.57.39).

The 2004 America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship will conclude Saturday, May 2 with day two of the competition. Events will begin at 9:00 a.m.
