Penn Relays
America East outdoor track and field athletes competed at the 110-year-old Penn Relays last Thursday through Saturday, April 22-24, on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, Pa.

Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y./James I. Oneill) represented the Binghamton University men's team as he placed sixth in the decathlon with 6,396 points. Quiller won two of the events during the competition, taking the 110 hurdles (14.86) and the pole vault (16’ 0.75”). Leading the America East women was Northeastern University’s Nicole Parker (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth), who soared 5' 10.5” in the high jump, setting a new school record and winning the collegiate division of the event.

In other men’s action, Stony Brook University’s Dale Summerville (Waiuku, New Zealand/King's College) set a new school record and finished sixth in the college division of the 5,000 (14:31.77). Northeastern’s Derek Anderson (Wrentham, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) competed in the championship division, taking fifth in the discus (174’ 9”) and eighth in the shot put (57’ 6.25”). The University of Maine’s 4x100 meter relay team (43.76) finished fourth in its section and UMBC’s Adam Grossman (Baltimore, Md./Pikesville) turned in a time of 10.69 in the 100. The University at Albany’s 4x400 relay team achieved a new IC4A-qualifying time of 3:15.50, while Great Dane Naron Stewart (Kingston, Jamaica/Kingston College) finished in a tie for 12th overall in the high jump (6” 6.75”).

Rounding out the women’s highlights was Zara Northover of Northeastern (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka), who took fifth in the shot put (51’ 3”) for the Huskies. Jackie Nunez (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Suffolk CC) of Stony Brook finished seventh in the college division of the 3,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:47.32. The Albany 4x100 relay team (47.71) placed sixth in the ECAC final, while the Maine 4x100 relay team (49.83) won its section. The UMBC 4x400 relay team (3:53.73) placed seventh in its heat to lead the Retriever women. University of Vermont’s Kristal Kostiew (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown) finished 13th in the hammer throw (170’ 10”) to lead the Catamounts.

Wildcat Invitational III
At the University of New Hampshire’s Wildcat Invitational III, the New Hampshire men (149.5 points) and women (175.66) each claimed first-place honors, defeating America East foe Maine which finished fifth in both the men’s (91) women’s (36) fields.

The New Hampshire women were led by Leighann Carpenter (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett) with a win in the 400 (1:00.65), Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J./Englishtown) who finished first in the javelin (37.82) and Lesley Read (Dover, N.H./Dover) who defeated all in the 1,500 (4:51.43). The Wildcat men recorded four first-place and five second-place finishes on the day. Highlights included Travis Parker (Fairfax, Va./James Robinson), who finished with a time of 22.23 to win the 200, and Taylor Scull (Bedford, N.H/Bedford) who finished ahead of 12 other runners to win the 400 (50.68).

Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine/Waterville), Jesse Ludwig (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) and Andre Dubois (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) all claimed first-place finishes for the Maine men, winning the pole vault (14’ 3.25”), long jump (22’ 7.25”), and discus (142’ 6”) respectively. Katie Page (Palmyra, Maine/Nokomis Regional) led the women with a first-place throw in the discus (137’ 6”).

Around the Conference

  • Joy Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) of Albany set a new school mark in the hammer throw with a first-place toss of 153’ 6.5” at the RPI Invitational.

  • At the Cornell Invitational, Binghamton’s Lindsey Bohrer-Yardley (Oneida, N.Y./Vernon-Verona Sherril) placed second in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase with an ECAC-qualifying time of 10:57.34. On the men's side, Andrew Cloud (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) notched an IC4A-qualifying mark in the hammer throw (173’).

  • The Boston University men’s and women’s teams took part in the Brown Invitational last Sunday in Providence, R.I. Highlighting the Boston University men’s performances was Lucjan Zaborowski (Chorzow, Poland/J. Slowacki) who won the men’s 400 (49.15). Teammate Barry Graham (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) placed second in the 400 (49.37) and Ken Vovoedski (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) garnered third-place honors in the triple jump (39’ 6”). For the Terrier women, Mary Ellen Bingham (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) claimed first-place honors in the triple jump (38” 0.25”) and third-place in the long jump (17’ 1.25”), while Julia Nazzar (Wanganuii, New Zealand) took second in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:54.56).

  • The University of Hartford took part in the Yale Invitational where Chris Spivey (Hyde Park, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) grabbed first-place in the men’s 200 (22.74) and finished second in the 100 (11.27). Guiding the women’s squad was Anike Orimogonje (Orange, N.J./Queen of Peace) who turned in a first-place finish in the 100 (12.41) and a second-place showing in the 200 (25.63).

    Also competing at the Yale Invitational, Stony Brook’s 4x400 women’s relay team garnered first-place accolades with a time of 4:10.74. Joe Cardinale (Commack, N.Y./Commack) finished third in the discus (146’ 11”) and Omar Moore (Rosedale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) claimed third in the long jump (19’ 0.5”) to lead the men.

  • The Vermont women competed at the Ithaca Quad Meet and the Dartmouth Invitational. Highlights included Allie Hill (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), who broke her own school record in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:40.28) and Kristal Kostiew, who won four events at Ithaca. At Dartmouth, the Catamounts won seven events.
