America East to Crown Champions in Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field

The 2004 America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2 at Northeastern University’s Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass.

Last season, the Northeastern women won their second-consecutive championship, while the University at Albany men won their first outdoor title. The Northeastern women have won 10 championships since 1989, while the University of Vermont has won three and Boston University two. On the men’s side, Northeastern has claimed six outdoor titles, while the University of New Hampshire has won four titles and the University of Maine and Albany have garnered one.

The championship begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with day one of the men’s decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Other Saturday finals for both men and women are: pole vault, long jump, hammer throw, javelin, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and 10,000-meter. The women's high jump final will also be contested.

Sunday’s events also begin at 9 a.m. with day two of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Other Sunday finals for men and women are: triple jump, discus throw, shot put, 4x100 relay, 1,500-meters, 400-meters, 800-meters, 100-meters, 400-meter hurdles, 200-meters, 5,000-meters, 4x800-meter relay, with the events concluding with the 4x400-meter relay. The women's 100-meter hurdles and the men's 110-meter hurdles and high jump finals will also be held.

Each America East individual event champion and relay team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Meet, held at the University of Florida Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29.

The America East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship is scored to eight places for all events. The value of first through eighth place is recorded as follows: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. All individual entries have the ability to score in the competition. One relay entry per institution may score.

Each of the ten America East member institutions—Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, Maine, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), New Hampshire, Northeastern, Stony Brook University and Vermont (women only)—will compete at the 2004 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
