The University at Albany men and Northeastern University women repeated as America East Indoor Track and Field Champions at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University. Complete Results (Women | Men)
The Albany men finished with 140.5 points followed by Northeastern (128.5), University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) (117.5), Boston University (95), University of New Hampshire (95), Binghamton University (86), University of Maine (84.5), Stony Brook University (30) and University of Hartford (1).
The Northeastern women collected a total of 179 points, while second-place Albany grabbed 128 and third-place New Hampshire scored 109. Maine (93), Boston University (75), Binghamton (55), UMBC (46), Stony Brook (46), Vermont (42) and Hartford (6) rounded out the women’s scoring.
Leading the Great Danes in Day 2 competition was Gered Burns, who won the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:26.50, and Kamar Elliot who was a winner in the triple jump with a distance of 49’ 3”. Albany also took home the gold in the men’s 4x800 relay (7:39.67).
Second-place Northeastern was led by Idris Payne, who claimed two first-place finishes on the day en rout to being named Most Outstanding Male Track Performer. Payne won the 200 with a time of 21.45, breaking his own championship record that he set a day earlier in the trials, and also grabbed gold in the 400 with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 47.21. Both Peter Jasmin and Derek Anderson also were individual champions for the Huskies as Jasmin won the 55 hurdles (7.66) and Anderson set a new America East Championship record in the shot put (56’ 1.75”).
UMBC, which was competing in their first ever America East Indoor Track and Field Championship, received strong performances from Adam Grossman, who won the 55 (6.40) and Ed Warner who was the top performer in the high jump (6’ 8.75”).
Three Terriers turned in first-place individual finishes on their home track and the New Hampshire men turned in two. Andrew Nacaxe, Jochen Dieckfoss and Nick Goodman of Boston University were individual champions in the 500 (1:03.20), mile (4:08.03) and 800 (1:54.17) respectively. The Boston University men also captured first in the 4x400 relay (3:13.05). Derek Anderson won the heptathlon (4971) and Steve Meinelt won the 3000 (8:19.65) to lead New Hampshire.
Rory Quiller, who grabbed first on Day 1 in the men’s pole vault (15’ 9”), also placed third in the heptathlon as he was named the Most Outstanding Male Field Performer.
Paving the way for the Northeastern women’s victory was Ahndraea Allen, who collected three first-place finishes for the Huskies and was named Most Outstanding Female Track Performer. In the 200, Allen broke her own America East Championship record, which she set yesterday, turning in a time of 24.15. She also grabbed gold in the 55 (7.06) and the 400 (55.70). Also picking up first-place points for the Huskies was Zara Northover who set a new America East record in the shot put (52’ 9.5”), Aquila Williams-Judge who won the 55 hurdles (8.00) and the 4x400 relay (3:50.75) team.
New Hampshire and Stony Brook each turned in a pair of first-place individual finishes on the day. Megan Hepp finished the 3000 in 9:53.51 and Leighann Carpenter ran the 800 in 2:13.43 for the Wildcats, while the Seawolves were paced by Corinne Leake in the 500 (1:14.41) and Jackie Nunez in the mile (4:57.20).
Other individual champions during the day were Christina Gingras of Vermont in the 1000 (2:53.66), Jen Aubin of Albany in the triple jump (40’ 1.5”), Claire Poliquin of Maine in the high jump (5’ 8”) and the Maine 4x800 relay (9:09.88) team. Kristal Kostiew of Vermont was named the Most Outstanding Female Performer as she placed second in the shot put (46’ 6”) and won the weight throw for the fourth consecutive year with a NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 61’ 7.75” during the first day of events.
The Huskies, led by head coach Sherman Hart, also took home the hardware for Coaching Staff of the Year on the women's side and Roberto Vives' Albany men's coaches won the same award in the men's field.
