Stony Brook’s Dale Summerville (Waiuku, New Zealand/King's College) and Leonora Joy (Auckland, New Zealand/Auckland University of Technology) have been named the America East Men’s and Women’s Cross Country performers of the week, respectively. The awards were announced Tuesday (October 5).
Summerville, a senior at SBU, captured his second individual title at the 2004 Metropolitan Cross Country Championships on Friday. With the victory, Summerville became the first Stony Brook harrier in school history to capture the men's title at the meet.
Joy picked up her second victory of the season, winning the 2004 Metropolitan Cross Country Championships on Friday, leading the team to its second runner-up finish in three seasons. The win marked the second time in two years that the Seawolves captured the women's title at the meet.

Stony Brook Women Second at Metropolitan Championships
The Stony Brook women’s cross country team finished second at the Metropolitan Championships (Results) last Friday behind the strong performances of Leonora Joy (Auckland, New Zealand/Auckland University of Technology) (first, 18:20) and Sarah Beresford (Karori, Wellington, New Zealand/Victoria University) (fourth, 18:46). Stony Brook finished second out of a possible nine teams with 68 team points, placing behind only the 15th-ranked Columbia. Joy’s victory marked the second-straight season the Seawolves have won the women’s title. Also placing in the top 10 for SBU was Dana Hastie (Johnsonville, New Zealand/Wellington) who crossed ninth in 19:10.
?Around the Conference in Women’s Cross Country:
Senior Alyssa Lotmore (Albany, N.Y./Bishop Maginn) finished third overall to lead the Albany women’s cross country tem to a fifth place finish at the Great American Cross Country festival. Albany finished the meet third out of 13 teams with 117 team points (Results).
Elsewhere in America East women’s cross country, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont competed at the Murray Keatinge Invitational on Saturday, October 2 (Results). UNH was the top America East team, placing sixth, with 122 points. Maine finished ninth with 283 points, followed by a 10th-place Vermont finish with 296 points. The top two America East finishers came from UNH, with Caitlin Hayes (Keene, N.H) and Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.) crossing 11th and 12th with times of 17:35 and 17:37 respectively. Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) was the first Black Bear to cross the finish line, placing 33rd, while Heather Mitchell (Queensbury, N.Y./Lake George) led Vermont with a 46th-place finish.
?Men’s Cross Country Action:
Robbie Freeman (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Great Neck South) led the Albany men’s squad to a third-place team finish, placing fifth individually with a time of 25:54. UA finished with 121 team points, just edging fourth-place Pittsburgh by one point (Results).
Elsewhere in America East men’s cross country, Maine topped New Hampshire and Vermont at the Murray Keatinge Invitational (Results). Maine placed fourth in the 11-team tournament with 111 team points. Maine’s Michael Lansing (Lovell, ME/Fryburg Academy) was the top America East finisher, placing 10th in a time of 24:45. New Hampshire placed fifth with 155 points, led by freshman Bobby Edgerton (Cornish, N.H.), who finished with a time of 25:36, giving him 29th place overall. The University of Vermont finished ninth at the meet with 279 points. The Catamounts top finisher was Brad Allen (Morrisville, Vt.), who placed 37th with a time of 25:52.
Dale Summerville led Stony Brook to a fifth place finish at the Metropolitan Championships last Friday. Summerville, who captured the men's title in 25:27, became the first Stony Brook male to win an individual Met title (Results).
