The UMBC swimming and diving teams had a busy week, taking on George Washington and William and Mary in one tri-meet, East Carolina in a dual-meet, and St. Francis and Howard in a second tri-meet. The Retriever men swept all five teams, while the women went 4-1, with their only loss coming to East Carolina.

Against George Washington and William and Mary, the UMBC men took individual first place finishes in all 13 events, while the women claimed eight. Carlos Canepa (Lima, Peru/Santa Maria) posted five first place finishes in the meets, while Jon Gdowik (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) claimed four first place dives over the three meets. Jessica Prosen (Columbia, Md./Seton Keough) led the UMBC women by capturing first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:31.10) and also in the 200 butterfly (2:08.19) in the first tri-meet, and Katie Spohnholz (Anchorage, Ark./Robert Service) won the one-meter dive (218.30) and three-meter dive (212.55) in the Retrievers second tri-meet.

Boston University swept Vermont in a record-breaking performance for the Terriers. Mike Kelly (Shrewsbury, N.J./Shrewsbury) set two pool records in the 50 freestyle (21.63) and 100 fly (52.70) and was on the pool record-breaking 200 medley relay (3:39.15) team. Lidija Breznikar (Kotpje, Slovenia) led the Terrier women with three first place finishes, while freshman Ali Fowler (Reno, Nevada/Reno High) was the top performer for the Catamounts winning the 1650 free (18:09.96).

The Vermont women also competed earlier in the week, defeating Sacred Heart 145-85. The win was the Catamounts seventh of the season, the most wins for Vermont since the 1986-87 season. Leading the Catamounts was Hillary Taglienti (Westwood, Mass./Westwood), who won the 100 backstroke (1:03.89) and was a member of the wining 200 medley relay (1:57.98) team.

The Terriers also competed in two meets during the week, losing to cross-town rival Boston College. Despite the loss, Boston University had some very promising performances, as Breznikar remained undefeated on the season (21-0), winning the 200 fly (2:07.62), the 200 breaststroke (2:21.91) and the 200 IM (2:09.69). Griffin Moodie (Edina, Minn./Edina) led the Terrier men, winning the 100 breast (1:01.87), the 100 fly (52.75) and was a member of the second place 200 medley relay (1:39.39) team.

The Stony Brook and Binghamton swimming and diving teams were both defeated this week, falling to St. John’s and St. Bonaventure respectively. Leading the Bearcats were Yun Qu (Hangzhou, China/Hangzhou), who captured first in the 1000 free (10:48.27) and the 100 fly (58.13), Laura Linek (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) who swam to first place in the 500 free (5:17.73) and the 200 free (1:56.92), and on the men’s side, Chris McGuire (Essex, England/ Palmer VI Form) who won the 200 IM (1:56.79) as well as the 100 fly (52.41). For the Seawolves, Kim Harris (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), Alison Porteus (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy), Shirlee Manoogian (Holbrook, N.Y./University of Maryland) and Jamie Bevilacqua (Lido Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) teamed up to set a new school mark in the 400 medley relay (4:03.70).
