Stony Brook's Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill./W. Aurora), Maine's Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash./John R. Rogers) and Northeastern's Kristin Ursillo (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) have received weekly volleyball honors. Goldsmith earns Player of the Week distinction, while Seipp and Ursillo were named Rookie of the Week and Setter of the Week respectively.
Goldsmith powered Stony Brook to a 4-0 week and helped extend SBU’s winning streak to seven. On Thursday she totaled a match high 25 kills to lead SBU past Manhattan 3-1 for its fourth win in a row. She continued her outstanding play over the weekend, leading Stony Brook to a 3-0 sweep at the Wagner College Invitational while hitting over .400 in each of the three matches. On Saturday, notching team-high 17 kills as the Seawolves knocked off Yale 3-0 for their fifth consecutive win. She followed that up with a 19 kills performance in a 3-1 win over Morgan State and 10 kills to go along with a .533 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep of Wagner. For her efforts, she was named the Wagner College Invitational MVP.
Seipp tallied a career-high 61 assists in a five-game loss to UMBC Friday and chipped in 29 more in Saturday’s loss to Florida Atlantic. She notched 13 digs to lead all Black Bears against Florida Atlantic and added a pair of service aces as well. In the final game Saturday, a 3-0 loss to the University of Connecticut, Seipp had 23 assists and five digs. She leads Maine in setting, averaging 7.88 assists per contest and she is fourth on the team in digs (2.30/game).
Ursillo had 174 assists through four Northeastern Victories, including a sweep in the Crimson Classic. Playing Harvard in the final match of the Classic, the senior captain led her Huskies with 58 assists, while adding 12 digs. Ursillo was named to the Classic’s All-Tournament team after averaging 11.82 assists per game.
