America East Cites Almost 1,200 Student-Athletes for Academic Accolades

A total of 1,179 student-athletes have been named to the 2002-03 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher it was announced Tuesday (July 8) by Chris Monasch, Commissioner of America East Conference. A total of 525 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the most recent athletic season. Both totals eclipsed the previous standards for total student-athletes earning these distinctions.

The student-athletes were members of teams in the 15 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, and softball.

Member institutions of America East Conference for 2002-03 included University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont. Quinnipiac University was an associate member in the sport of men’s lacrosse.

Binghamton had the most representatives named to the Academic Honor Roll as 182 Bearcat student-athletes were selected. Maine and New Hampshire each had 167 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll. Boston University followed with 150 student-athletes receiving honors. Albany (126), Vermont (118), Hartford (98), Stony Brook (95) and Northeastern (76) rounded out the schools.

Maine had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 167 of its 319 student-athletes (52.35 percent) received that distinction. Binghamton (50.28 percent) also had more than half its total student-athletes named to the honor roll.

Binghamton had 96 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll to lead all institutions. Maine (83) and New Hampshire (77) were others well represented by student-athletes with grade-point averages at 3.5 or better.

Institutional sport leaders were: men’s basketball, Binghamton, Northeastern, and Vermont (5 student-athletes); women’s basketball, Binghamton (10); men’s swimming and diving, Boston University (12); women’s swimming and diving, Maine (21); men’s indoor track and field, New Hampshire (24); men's outdoor track and field, Maine (28); women’s indoor track and field, New Hampshire (33); women's outdoor track and field, New Hampshire (39); golf, Boston University (6); men’s tennis, Binghamton (8); women’s tennis, Vermont (9); men’s lacrosse, Quinnipiac (17); women’s lacrosse, Binghamton (13); baseball, Binghamton (18); and softball, Binghamton (12).
