Northeastern Women, Albany Men Win America East Track and Field Championships

The Northeastern University women repeated as America East Outdoor Track and Field Champions, while the University at Albany men won their first Outdoor title Sunday at the Clarence Beckett Family Track and Field Complex on the University of Maine campus.

The Northeastern women posted a two-day total of 183.5 points. Albany was second with 135 points, followed by Maine (125), University of Vermont (114.5), University of New Hampshire (98), Boston University (86), Binghamton University (52), Stony Brook University (51), and University of Hartford (0).

The Albany men set an Outdoor Championship record with 230 points, breaking the record set by Northeastern at the 1991 and 1992 Men’s Outdoor Championship. Northeastern was second with 158 points, followed by Maine (106), New Hampshire (105), Boston University (102), Binghamton (87), Stony Brook (42), and Hartford (8).

Northeastern’s Ahndraea Allen was named the Most Outstanding Female Track Performer after posting wins in the 200m and 400m Dashes and running on the winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Allen set America East records in the 200m (23.79 in the preliminary rounds), 400m (54.58), and with the 4x400m relay (3:44.85). The 4x100m relay time of 46.71 was the second fastest time in championship history. Nicole Parker of Northeastern was a two event champion, winning the Heptathlon with a meet record score of 4754 points, and the High Jump (1.70m). Fellow Huskies Joane Merlain and Zara Northover won the 800m (2:09.98) and Shot Put (14.71m) respectively.

Albany’s Teresa Covert was a double-winner, as she placed first in both the 100m (11.78) and 100m Hurdles (13.51). Maine’s Viktoriya Rybalko also was a two-event champion, winning the Long Jump (meet record 6.37m) and Triple Jump (12.47m). Boston University posted champions in the 5000m, as Charlotte Coffey set a championship record with a time of 17:16.61, Lauren Warman won the 400m Hurdles (59.87), Andrea Stuermer won the Pole Vault (3.75m), and Natalie Grant won the Hammer Throw with an America East record throw of 59.90m. New Hampshire won the 4x800m Relay in a meet record time of 8:59.79, while posting individual winners in the 10,000m (Caitlin Hayes – 36:41.38) and 3000m Steeplechase (Megan Hepp in a championship record time of 10:47.46). Stony Brook’s Jackie Nunez won the 1500m with a time of 4:32.44.

Vermont’s Kristal Kostiew was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Female Field Performer, as she won the Discus (43.00m) and Javelin (39.77), and finished second in the Hammer (56.20m) and Shot (13.71).

The Female Coaching Staff of the Year award went to head coach Sherman Hart’s Northeastern staff.

Albany’s Jesse Bennett won the Most Outstanding Male Track Performer award after winning the 100m in a time of 10.97, running on the victorious 4x100m Relay team (41.70), and placing third in the 200m (22.15). Individual champions for the Great Danes were Aggrey Morris (400m – 47.82), Kristif Molnar (800m – 1:51.28), Paul Roche (110m Hurdles – 14.61), Joel Vazquez (400m Hurdles – 53.35), and Naron Stewart (High Jump – 2.03m).

Vincent Tortorella of Northeastern received the Most Outstanding Male Field Performer. He won the Hammer (62.20m), and finished second in the Discus (50.66m) third in the Shot (15.62m), and sixth in the Javelin (53.23m). Other individual winners for the Huskies were Adam Crossman, who won the Javelin with a throw of 59.81, Derek Anderson, who won the Shot with a throw of 16.50m, Ryan Cahill, who placed first in the Pole Vault with a height of 4.56m, and Idris Payne, who claimed the 200m crown with a time of 21.81.

New Hampshire had individual champions in the 10,000m (Steve Meinelt – 31:58.06), Triple Jump (Greg Taylor – 14.56m), and Decathlon (Craig Lange – 6185 points). Boston University won the 4x400m Relay with a time of 3:14.12, and had individual champions in the 1500m (Jochen Dieckfoss – 3:47.09) and the 5000m (Dan Coval – 14:47.33). Maine posted individual champions in the 3000m Steeplechase (Mike Lansing – 9:15.97) and Long Jump (Jesse Ludwig – 6.99m), and also took home the 4x800m Relay title with a time of 7:41.16.

Head coach Roberto Vives’s Albany staff was named the Male Coaching Staff of the Year award winner.

All America East event champions, with the exception of the 10,000m, the Decathlon, the Heptathlon, and the 4x800m Relay, received automatic bids to the NCAA East Regional meet, to be held at George Mason University.
