University of Vermont women and Northeastern University men lead after the first day of competition at the 15th annual America East Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the Clarance Beckett Family Track and Field Complex on the University of Maine campus in Orono.

The Vermont women tallied 47.5 points. University of Maine is second with 46 points, followed by defending champion Northeastern, with 38.5 points. University of New Hampshire is fourth, tallying 34 points with Boston University (28 points), University at Albany (24 points), Binghamton University (11 points), Stony Brook University (5 points), and University of Hartford (0 points) rounding out the Day One scoring.
Northeastern totaled 65 points to lead Albany (62 points) in the men’s field, followed by New Hampshire (44 points), Binghamton (39 points), Maine (31 points), Boston University (24 points), Stony Brook (8 points), and Hartford (0).
The Catamount women tallied 28 points as Kristal Kostiew and Sarah Lovell, and Bridget Ferrin and Margery Bolton took second and third places in the Hammer Throw and the 10,000 meter Run, respectively. Kostiew also earned points in the Javelin Throw, repeating as conference champion in that event.
Maine had an individual champion in the Long Jump, as Viktoriya Rybalko broke her own America East record with a mark of 6.37 meters. Megan Hepp of New Hampshire won the 3000 meter Steeplechase in a conference record timeof 10:47.46, while Boston University’s Natalie Grant also broke a conference record, winning the Hammer Throw with a mark of 59.90 meters. In other Day One finals, Caitlin Hayes of New Hampshire won the 10,000 meter run with a time of 36:41.38, and Andrea Stuermer captured the Pole Vault crown, her third title in the last four years, with a performance of 3.75 meters.
The Husky men dominated the Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, and Hammer Throw, having the event winner and multiple scorers in each event. In the Pole Vault, Ryan Cahill repeated as champion, with a performance of 4.56 meters. Northeastern also had the second (Brian Stieg) and sixth place finishers (Dave Wilkes) to total 21 points in that event. In the Javelin Throw, Adam Crossman won his second straight conference crown with a throw of 59.81 meters. Vincent Tortorella (sixth), Ricardo Parente (seventh), and Mike Randall (eighth) also placed for the Huskies. Tortorella also scored in the Hammer Throw, winning his second consecutive title with a throw of 62.20 meters. Derek Anderson placed fourth for Northeastern.
Maine had two individual champions, with Mike Lansing winning the Steeplechase with a time of 9:15.97, and Jesse Ludwig in the Long Jump, with a performance of 6.99 meters. New Hampshire’s Steve Meinelt won the 10,000 meter Run with a time of 31:58.06, and Naron Stewart of Albany won the High Jump with a height of 2.03 meters.
All America East event champions automatically qualify for the NCAA Regional meet.
The championship continues Sunday at 9 a.m. with Day Two of the Decathlon and Heptathlon. All other finals are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
