The 15th annual America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, at the Clarence Beckett Family Track and Field Complex on the University of Maine Campus in Orono, Maine.
The Northeastern University men have won the men's championship the past two years. Northeastern's women's team has won nine of the last twelve women’s championships.
Northeastern returns winners in five events, as well as 2002 Most Outstanding Male Field Performer Derek Anderson, who placed second in the shot and the discus, and finished third in the hammer. Returning champions for the Huskies are Bryan McCants (400m Hurdles), Ryan Cahill (Pole Vault), Adam Crossman (Javelin), and Vincent Tortorella (Discus, Hammer). University at Albany also has two event winners looking to repeat in Kristof Molnar (800m Run) and Andrew Allstadt (10,000m Run).
University of Vermont's Kristal Kostiew, named the Most Outstanding Female Field Performer at last year's championship after winning the Javelin, Hammer, and the Shot Put, is returning to defend her titles. For defending champion Northeastern, Ebony Jack, the returning 100m Dash champion, and Ahndraea Allen, the returning 200m and 400m Dash champion, and Whittly Jourdan, the defending 100m Hurdles champion, return. Viktoriya Rybalko of University of Maine will attempt to repeat as champion in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
The de Decathlon and Heptathlon are being contested at the America East Championship meet for the first time since 1989.
The championship begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with day one of the men’s Decathlon and the women's Heptathlon. Other Saturday finals for both men and women are; Pole Vault, Long Jump, Hammer Throw, Javelin, 3,000m Steeplechase, and 10,000m Run. The men's High Jump final will also be contested.
Sunday’s events also begin at 9 a.m. with day two of the men's Decathlon and the women's Heptathlon. Other Sunday finals for men and women are; Triple Jump, Discus Throw, Shot Put, 4x100m Relay, 1500m Run, 400m Dash, 800m Run, 100m Dash, 400m Hurdles, 200m Dash, 5000m Run, 4x800m Relay, with the events concluding with the 4x400m Relay. The men's 110m Hurdles and the women's 100m Hurdles and High Jump finals will also be held.
Each America East event champion including relays, with the exception of the men's and women's 10,000m Run, the Decathlon and the Heptatlon, receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Meet, held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. on May 30-31.
Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, Maine, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern, Stony Brook University and Vermont—will vie for the 2003 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
