America East Announces Week 5 Baseball Honors

Junior first baseman Barry Chamberland (Bellows Falls, Vt./Bellows Falls) of Vermont is the America East Player of the Week. Sophomore Derek Miller (Pelham, N.H./ Pelham) of Vermont is the America East Pitcher of the Week. Outfielder Chris Emanuele (Mississagua, Ontario/Michael Power/St. Joseph) of Northeastern and pitcher Kyle Thomas (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) of Albany share America East Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced by America East on April 21.

Chamberland hit a team-best .533 with 4 HR, 9 RBI along with 1.333 slugging average and .667 OBP as Vermont went 5-1 to improve to 18-5. He homered in three straight games and four of the six. Chamberland hit two HR’s, scored six times, and drove in 4 vs. Stony Brook, also drawing 4 BB. He now leads Cats with .400 average, 6 HR, 19 RBI, .675 slugging and .489 OBP.

Miller held the top offensive team in the conference to just three hits in a 2-0 shutout of Stony Brook on Saturday. He also had nine K’s and walked two in his second complete game shutout of the season. It was the first time all season that Stony Brook had been shut out. Opponents are hitting just .168 vs. Miller, tops on the Vermont staff.

Emanuele hit .417 on the week, with four doubles, three RBI and two stolen bases. He batted .583 with three doubles in the weekend series with Maine. Emanuele leads the Huskies with a .338 batting average and 26 hits.

Thomas went 2-0 last week and was critical to Albany’s success in conference play. He went five innings against Northeastern on April 14, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on six hits, walked two and struck out five to help the Great Danes win the series 3-1. Against Binghamton on April 19, he tossed the first 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on five hits to give Albany its first-ever conference sweep.
