Week Two Baseball Honors Announced

Sophomore catcher Jason Martin (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) of Albany is the America East Player of the Week. Senior Jamie Merchant (Colchester, Vt./ Rice Memorial) of Vermont is the America East Pitcher of the Week. Rookie outfielder Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) of Maine is the America East Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced by America East on March 31.

Martin took over as the team’s leading hitter with a 10-for-16 week (.625 average) and is now hitting .407 on the season. The sophomore catcher is in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak and is hitting .500 during that span. Against Yale in game two of a doubleheader on March 30, Martin went 5-for-5 with six RBI to lead the Great Danes to a 14-11 win. He also recorded a slugging percentage of .875.

Merchant hurled his second nine-inning complete game in beating Princeton, 4-2, on March 28. He allowed five hits and just one walk, no earned runs while striking out nine. Mechant allowed only three base runners after the second inning, lowering his ERA to 0.72 and has now has struck out 26 in 25 IP (only 5 BB, .163 opp. Ave).

Quintal was 5-for-7 from the plate with three walks and three RBI. In the first game of the New York Tech doubleheader, Quintal went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles. In the second game, Quintal walked three times, scoring twice. Against Rhode Island, Quintal hit an RBI single to cut the Black Bears deficit to 2-1 in the seventh.
