Vermont sophomore forward Taylor Coppenrath (West Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and Northeastern guard Jose Juan Barea (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Miami Christian) were named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday (February 3).
Coppenrath averaged 27 ppg and 7.5 rpg in two games. The 6-9 forward had an America East season-high 38 points, including 23 in the second half, on 15-of-20 shooting from the floor and 11 rebounds in a 92-75 win at New Hampshire Wednesday.
Barea led the Huskies to three wins last week, was named America East Rookie of the Week. He had 18 points and a season-high eight rebounds in a 59-48 win over Binghamton Wednesday. He added nine points, all in the second half, in a 51-50 win over Hartford Friday. The 5-11 point guard had an improbable left-handed 14-footer, a rebound and a steal in the final minute. He finished up the week by draining his first three-pointer of the game (previously 0-for-6) with 20 seconds left to force overtime in an 89-80 win at Albany Sunday. He had nine points and a game-high eight assists vs. the Great Danes.
