Junior forward Aaron Yantzi (Waterloo, Ontario/Waterloo-Oxford) of Vermont is the Wilson Player of the Week for the second time this season, and freshman guard Rachel Laws (Wyncote, N.Y./ Cheltehman) of Binghamton earns Rookie of the Week honors for the first time. The honors were announced Monday, February 24.
Yantzi led Vermont to a 2-0 week, with both wins coming on the road. She scored a game-high 22 points, on 9-for-13 shooting, and grabbed four rebounds in UVM’s victory at New Hampshire (February 19). She also netted a game-high 26 points, including her 1,000th career point, and grabbed eight rebounds in the Catamounts victory at Boston University (February 22), which moved Vermont into sole possession of second place in the America East standings. Yantzi went 9-for-17 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line against the Terriers. She became the 14th Catamount to reach the 1,000-career point milestone and just the sixth player to reach the mark prior to their senior season.
Laws scored nine points against Albany on Wednesday (February 19) and 12 against Northeastern on Saturday (February 22), vaulting the Bearcats from ninth to sixth in the conference standings. She also grabbed seven rebounds in each of the two Bearcat victories. She shot 52.9 percent from the floor for the week. Her 31 minutes and four assists against Albany were both career-highs. Laws has now reached double figures in scoring seven times in the past 10 games.
