Senior Ryan Stys (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) is the America East Player of the Week after momentous game Sunday. Albany’s Jon Iati (York, Pa./York Catholic) and Stony Brook’s Mitchell Beauford (Dix Hills, N.Y./Christ the King) share America East Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced Monday (December 29).
Stys not only scored a career-high 26 points, including the game-winner with 0.7 seconds left in a 68-66 win over Sam Houston State, he also reached the 1,000-point plateau for his career with his final field goal. That performance came a day after receiving eight stitches in his lip to stop a cut suffered when taking a charge in a game vs. Drexel. Despite the injury, the 6-0 guard scored 10 points vs. the Dragons. He was named to the all-tournament team of the FIU Holiday Classic.
Iati scored a team-high 15 points and added five assists while playing all 45 minutes in a 63-55 overtime win over Lehigh Monday. He also scored 15 points and had a career-high six assists at Massachusetts Sunday. The 5-9 guard has scored 15 or more points in each of his last six games and has scored in double figures in seven of eight games this season.
Beauford scored a season-high 15 points, had two assists and set a Stony Brook single-game record with six steals at Boston College Tuesday. The 6-0 guard is second on the team with 10.5 ppg.
