New Hampshire's Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif./Los Gatos) and Hartford's Kelly McEathron (Ballston Spa, N.Y., Burnt Hills) were named the America East Co-Players of the Week, while Hartford's Jill Vertanen (Youngstown, Ohio/Canfield) was named Rookie of the Week and Stony Brook's Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) was named Setter of the Week. The awards were announced Monday, November 17.
Coler registered 31 kills, 22 digs, five total blocks, four service aces and a .225 hitting percentage in two matches last week. Coler averaged 4.43 kills per game and 3.14 digs per game in wins over Northeastern and Albany. Coler needs 10 digs to break the all-time school record currently held by former Wildcat Jillian Ross (1,207). Coler notched 17 kills in the 3-1 win over Northeastern and 14 kills in the 3-0 win over Albany to help guide UNH to the No. 1 seed in the America East Tournament.
McEathron posted back to back double-doubles as Hartford wrapped up its season with a sweep of Binghamton (3-2) and UMBC (3-1) over the weekend. She hit .338 over the two matches and recorded a total of 35 kills and 29 digs. McEathron led the Hawks with a team-high 22 kills and added 15 digs in the victory over Binghamton on Friday. She then followed up that performance with 13 kills and 14 digs against UMBC on senior night. She clinched the victory against the Retrievers by tipping the winning point over the net in a decisive 35-33 win in game four. McEathron finished her Hartford career ranked fourth on the all-time kills list with 1,147.
Vertanen hit .333 as the Hawks swept Binghamton and UMBC over the weekend. She tallied a career-high 10 kills in the Binghamton match while adding five digs, two block solos, and three block assists. The freshman then added nine kills on 21 attempts to finish with a .429 hitting percentage in the win over UMBC. She also chipped in with six digs, four block solos, and two block assists against the Retrievers.
Zub continued to be the steadying force for the Stony Brook Seawolves in their wins over UMBC and Binghamton this weekend. Against UMBC on Friday night, Zub totaled a match-high 34 assists and 13 digs, chipping in with two kills in the 3-0 SBU sweep. The following night, she recorded 47 assists, 9 defensive digs and seven kills in the Seawolves 3-1 victory over Binghamton. For the weekend, she recorded 81 assists (11.57 per game), and 22 digs (3.14 per game), and nine kills.
