Stony Brook's Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill./W. Aurora) and Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) have been named America East Player of the Week and Setter of the Week respectively. Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) of Binghamton received Rookie of the Week honors.
Goldsmith led the Seawolves to a 2-0 record this week, including a defeat of first place Northeastern on Saturday, giving the Huskies their second loss in conference, both of which came at the hands of Stony Brook. Against Northeastern, she totaled 18 kills to go along with 12 digs in a five-game thriller. The previous night versus Albany, Goldsmith smacked 14 kills and 18 digs in a 3-1 victory that pulled the team into a third place tie with the Great Danes.
Meffert dished out 89 assists in two matches, including 53 in five-game setback to New Hampshire. Meffert also contributed eight kills, five service aces, 20 digs and 10 blocks on the weekend.
Zub was impressive in Stony Brook’s back-to-back wins over Albany and Northeastern this weekend. Against Albany on Friday night, Zub totaled a match-high 42 assists and nine digs, chipping in with three kills in the 3-1 SBU victory. The following night, she tallied 59 assists, 15 defensive digs and three kills in the Seawolves 3-2 victory over Northeastern. For the weekend, she recorded 101 assists and 24 digs, averaging 11.2 assists per game.
