Stony Brook junior forward Jairus McCollum (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was named America East Player of the Week while Northeastern guard Jose Juan Barea (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Miami Christian) and Albany guard Jamar Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Our Savior New American) shared America East Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced on January 27.
McCollum scored 16 points and added five rebounds in an 81-79 win over Maine Sunday (January 26). His three-point play with 5:36 left put the Seawolves ahead to stay. He also scored 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had five assists in a 72-67 win over Northeastern Wednesday (January 22).
Barea scored five points in the final 35 seconds, a deep trey to break a 65-65 tie and two decisive free throws, as the Huskies handed crosstown rival Boston University its first conference loss of the season. The 5-11 guard had 18 points and four assists.
Wilson scored 20 points, including six in the third overtime, and handed out five assists as the Great Danes defeated Dartmouth 85-84 Saturday (January 26). With Albany trailing 84-83, Wilson drew a foul and calmly sank two free throws with 27.9 seconds left for the win. The 6-1 guard played 53 minutes vs. Dartmouth and averaged 19 ppg for the week. He has now scored in double figures in 12-straight games.
