University of Hartford junior Pedja Zdravkovic and Northeastern University senior Anders Hoyem have been chosen America East Scholar-Athletes in the sports of men’s tennis and men’s soccer, respectively. The two are the only repeat selections among the conference’s 21 individual sports winners. Zdravkovic was also a scholar-athlete choice last season while Hoyem earned that honor in 1999-2000.
A committee of athletics administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose the honorees from the nearly 3,000 student-athletes who competed at America East institutions last year. Each honoree was a starter or prominent reserve on his or her team and has a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20. First-year students, including transfer students, are not eligible for these honors.
Zdravkovic is a two-time Most Outstanding Performer at the America East Men’s Tennis Championship and led the Hawks to the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship in 2002. He carries a 3.67 grade-point average as an art design major. Hoyem, a two-time first-team all-conference choice, owns the Husky career record with 33 assists. The finance major has a 3.94 grade-point average.
University at Albany led the way with six selections, including men’s lacrosse player Emil Bove, a junior who carries a perfect 4.00 grade-point average with a dual major in public policy and economics. Joining Bove were junior Alissa Gibbs of the volleyball team and senior Eddie Scott of the baseball team, each of whom earned America East first-team all-conference accolades in 2001-02, and junior Theresa Masse of the women’s lacrosse team, senior Cara Caffell of the women’s basketball team and senior Joe Vukovic of the men’s basketball team.
Other Scholar-Athletes include junior Adam Fuchs of Binghamton University, senior David Rozado of Boston University and senior Amy DeCamp of University of New Hampshire, each of whom was an individual conference champion in 2001-02.
Fuchs, a management major, was the individual champion at the America East Golf Championship posting a five-over-par 179. Rozado, a business administration and management major, was named the Men’s Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 2002 America East Championship after winning the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle events and leading the Terriers to the conference title. DeCamp, a graduate student with a perfect 4.00 grade-point average in kinesiology/exercise science, was chosen the Scholar-Athlete in both women’s indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. She holds the school indoor records in the 1500 meters and the mile and was named the Most Outstanding Women’s Track Performer at the 2002 America East Outdoor Track and Field Championship after winning the 1500 meters and finishing second in the 800 meters.
Senior Leigh Ann Hlywak of University of Maine was chosen the Scholar-Athlete in softball. A four-time all-conference selection at third base, Hlywak recently graduated with a 3.79 grade-point average in elementary education.
Sophomore Michele Palmer of University of Vermont and senior Daniel Hocking of New Hampshire, each of whom finished second at the America East Cross Country Championships, were chosen in cross country. Hocking, who was second in the mile and the 3,000 meters at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championship, was also selected in that sport. Senior George Deane of Vermont, the winner of the 1,500 meters at the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championship, was that sport’s Scholar-Athlete.
Junior Katharina Lindner of Hartford, who has earned all-conference honors in each of her three seasons and has a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a communications major, was the Scholar-Athlete for women’s soccer. Northeast Regional All-American Marcie Boyer, a senior from New Hampshire, was selected the Scholar-Athlete for field hockey. Sophomore Kate Abbott of Maine, a member of the 2002 America East Champion 200 freestyle relay team, was the Scholar-Athlete for women’s swimming and diving. Senior Martha Barrett, the team Most Valuable Player for the Stony Brook University women’s tennis team, was selected in that sport.
America East will select a Men's and Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year from this list of finalists later this summer.
Member institutions of America East Conference for the 2001-02 academic year included Albany, Binghamton, Boston University, Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Stony Brook, and Vermont.
