New Hamsphire Sweeps Women's Lacrosse Awards

DURHAM, N.H.-- University of New Hampshire swept America East's top three women's lacrosse individual awards in voting conducted by the conference's head coaches. Junior midfielder Jessie Groszkowski was named America East Player of the Year, attack Jess Burnap was named Rookie of the Year and Sandy Bridgeman was named Coach of the Year. It marks the first time in the seven-year history of the awards that a New Hampshire player has won either Player or Rookie of the Year honors. Bridgeman is a repeat selection as Coach of the Year.

Groszkowski leads America East and ranks 18th in the nation in scoring with 53 goals and eight assists for 61 points. She has also compiled 46 ground balls to rank among the top 10 in America East in that category.

Burnap is fourth on the Wildcats in scoring with 25 goals and five assists for 30 points. She has 29 ground balls.

Bridgeman has guided the Wildcats to a perfect 4-0 mark in America East as the top seed in the conference championship. New Hampshire is 11-5 overall has been ranked as high as No. 20 in the IWLCA Poll this season.

Groszkowski, who also earned first-team all-conference honors in 2001, is joined on the all-conference first-team at midfield by teammate Sue Yund and seniors Ericka Hergenroeder and Kristin Abruzzese of Boston University. Yund, a second-team choice in 2001, has scored 30 goals and five assists for 35 points. Hergenroeder, a first-team all-conference selection in 2000, is second on the Terriers in scoring with 42 goals and 11 assists for 53 points. Abruzzese, who has been named to an all-conference squad in each of her four seasons, including first-team honors in 1999 and 2000 in addition to this season, leads the Terriers and is third in America East in scoring with 36 goals and 19 assists for 55 points.

Junior Andrea Esposito of University at Albany and seniors Kelly Trahon of Boston University, Magan Clavin of New Hampshire and Courtney LaMere of University of Vermont are the first-team attacks. Esposito has 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points to rank seventh in America East in scoring. Trahon has 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points. Clavin has 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points. LaMere, a second-team choice in 2001, is the first Catamount to earn first-team honors in the seven-year history of the awards. She leads America East in goals (38 in 14 games/2.71 gpg) and has 12 assists for 50 points to rank second in the conference in scoring.

The first-team defenders are seniors Allison Beagle of Albany, Gabby Juocys of Boston University, a first-team choice in 2001 and a second-team selection in 2000, and Jen Magill and Nicole Moore, both of New Hampshire.

New Hampshire junior Danielle Martin was selected as the first-team goalkeeper. Martin is 11-5 with a conference-leading 6.89 goals against average and a .569 save percentage. She ranks second in the nation in goals against average for the Wildcats, who rank second nationally in team defense.

The second team consists of Burnap, senior Molly Cherington of New Hampshire and rookies Alyssa Trudel of Albany and Mackenzie Dean of Vermont. The midfielders are Maria Ferrucci and Theresa Masse, both juniors from Albany, and sophomores Hilary Maynes of New Hampshire and Molly Sheehan of Vermont. The defenders are senior Liz Adamo of Albany, sophomores Liz Eberhart and Shasha Lang of Boston University, and junior Jen Smith of New Hampshire.

Senior Brooke Barrett of Boston University, who earned first-team honors in both 2000 and 2001, is the second-team goalkeeper. Barrett is 6-10 with a 10.36 goals against average and a .492 save percentage.

Burnap, Trudel, and Dean were joined on the all-rookie team by midfielder Jenn Rajczak and goalkeeper Francine Beltempo of Albany, midfielder Erin Wall of Binghamton University, defender Karlene Lihota and goalkeeper Anne Sheridan of Boston University, midfielder Laura Dosdall and defender Renee Nemmers of New Hampshire and attack Vanessa Cox of Vermont. The all-rookie team is chosen regardless of position.

Each of the first and second-team all-conference selections and 10 of the 11 all-rookie choices will be in action this week at the America East Championship. No. 1 seed New Hampshire will host the championship at Memorial Field. The Wildcats will play No. 4 Vermont at 1 p.m. Thursday followed by No. 2 Boston University vs. No. 3 Albany. The Championship game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday.
