Spalding Player of the Week: Binghamton University senior forward Sarah Cartmill (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) led the way in Binghamton’s crucial win at New Hampshire on Sunday, scoring 26 points and grabbing a season-high 14 rebounds. She scored 17 of her points in the second half as the Bearcats retained sole possession of first place in the America East Conference. Earlier in the week, Cartmill was one of three Binghamton players in double figures, as she scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. For the week, Cartmill averaged 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds as the Bearcats went a perfect 2-0 on the road and wrapped up a four-game road trip with a 3-1 record against conference competition.
Spalding Rookie of the Week: Freshman forward Francesca Vanin of Northeastern University (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) scored a Northeastern freshman-record 31 points to lead the Huskies past Maine 82-73 at Solomon Court on Sunday afternoon. Vanin was 8-13 from the floor and 15-16 from the foul line, setting an NU game record for successful free throws. She also pulled down four rebounds and had two steals in the contest. NU led just 35-34 at the half, but used a 16-6 run at the start of the second half to open a 51-40 edge with 12:47 to play. Vanin had eight points in the surge. The Huskies extended the lead to as much as 14, 58-44, after a pair of Vanin free throws with 10:07 left. On Thursday night, Vanin chipped in 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals against Vermont. Vanin leads NU in scoring and rebounding averaging 13.0 points and 7.1 boards per game. She has scored in double figures in all but five games this season and has posted six-straight double-figure outings.
