Maine Sweeps Weekly Spalding Awards

Spalding Player of the Week: University of Maine sophomore guard Melissa Heon (Somersworth, N.H./Somersworth) averaged 18.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two wins last week …She scored a career-high 24 points in a 68-65 win over the Wildcats in her home state of New Hampshire … She shot 5-11 from the field but was 4-5 from three-point range and 10-10 from the line and played all 40 minutes … Heon was 4-4 from the line in the final 24 seconds to help seal the win … In the win over Boston University, she scored 13 points … She also grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists, and recorded four steals in a team-high 35 minutes … She assisted on Julie Veilleux’s go-ahead basket with 11 seconds left.

Spalding Rookie of the Week: Freshman forward Kim Corbitt of University of Maine (Albany, N.Y./Colonie) scored eight points in each win, shooting 5-9 from the field and 6-6 from the line … She tied for team-high five assists in the BU win … Her two free throws with 2:53 left tied the game, UMaine’s first tie of the game … Corbitt assisted on UMaine’s first go-ahead basket when she inbounded the ball off an opponent’s basket, and passed to Julie Veilleux to give UMaine its first lead of the game, 63-61 with 2:01 left … She grabbed a rebound of a missed FT and went to the line and made two shots with two seconds left to give UMaine a 67-64 edge … Corbitt accounted for via, assist or free throw, eight of Maine’s final 10 points in the BU win … She hit two free throws with 56 seconds left against UNH to give UMaine a 64-63 lead … On the season, she is shooting 83 percent (58-70) from the line.
