Vermont won a 4-2 decision over Hartford in penalty kicks to advance to the America East Men’s Soccer Championship game. The Catamounts and Hawks battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie in an America East Championship semifinal game at Centennial Field before the result was decided in penalty kicks. Vermont, 10-6-2, travels to Northeastern, a 3-1 winner over New Hampshire in the other semifinal Saturday night, for the America East Championship game Sunday, November 17 at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
The Catamounts substituted senior Ryan Corry for David Sullivan, who had played all 110 minutes in goal during play, for the best-of-five penalty kick overtime. Corry came up with two diving saves to his right to stop Peter Sjolin and Guy Primor and lead the win. After Hartford’s Asaf Lubezky and Vermont’s Tim Parisi had traded goals on the first kicks, Corry made back-to-back saves on Sjolin and Primor. Meanwhile, Neil Beasley and America East Defensive Player of the Year Keli Helgason were converting kicks for the Catamounts for a 3-1 lead. Costa Kyritsis made it 3-2 when he scored for the Hawks, but Mike Samer sent the Catamounts to the championship game with a low shot to the left of Hartford goalkeeper Ryan Carr.
Vermont had evened the score at 2-2 in the 59th minute when Adam Wallace turned and fed Samer, who booted an eight-yard shot to the right side by Carr for his third goal of the season. The teams then played 31 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute golden goal overtimes without scoring.
Vermont scored first when Ethan Hutchins headed a cross from Wallace inside the left post in the 13th minute. It was the fifth goal of the season for Hutchins. Hartford tied the game in the 18th minute when Alon Lubezky scored his conference-leading 14th goal of the season on a header inside the left post off a cross from Maurizio Sylvestri.
Sjolin gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead when he headed a shot to the right off a cross from Primor in the 37th minute. It was the fifth goal of the season for Sjolin.
Sullivan had five saves for the Catamounts, who enjoyed a 27-15 edge in shots at goal. Carr made eight saves for the Hawks, 7-10-1.
On Saturday night, America East Offensive Player of the Year Atha Kirkopoulos scored in the 60th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lead top-seeded Northeastern to a 3-1 win over fourth-seeded New Hampshire in the America East Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals at Parsons Field. Kirkopoulos took a cross from Michael Cipriano and beat Wildcat goalkeeper Mike Vignola with a low shot to the far post from 10 yards out. It was the eighth goal of the season for Kirkopoulos.
Senior Nate Houghton had two goals for the Huskies, 10-7-2. He added his second of the game and eighth of the season a little more than two minutes after Kirkopoulos had scored to give Northeastern a 3-1 lead.
Both teams wasted little time in scoring. Houghton scored off a scramble in front of Vignola in the third minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. New Hampshire evened it in the fourth minute when sophomore Logan Lee headed in a throw-in from Doug Lawver for his 10th goal of the season.
America East Rookie of the Year Sergio Saccoccio made seven saves for Northeastern. Vignola had three stops for the Wildcats, 10-5-2.
The Catamounts will be seeking their first America East title since 2000 and fourth in the 14-year history of the conference championship. Northeastern has never won the championship.
