Northeastern won a dramatic game at Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA College Cup. After the game was tied 1-1 through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the Huskies won the penalty-kick session 7-6 as Tom Heimreid scored the winning goal in the ninth round of kicks. Freshman goalie Sergio Saccoccio had two saves in the penalty-kick session. The Huskies advance on to meet Boston College on at 1 p.m. on Wednesday (November 27) in Chestnut Hill.
Nate Houghton gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when he scored unassisted.
The Mountain Hawks tied it in the 81st minute when Steve Fisher scored off an assist from Evan Bruno.
Northeastern outshot Lehigh 8-6 in the first 90 minutes. The overtime format was two 10-minute periods, golden-goal style. The Huskies had a super opportunity to win the game in the first overtime, but Lehigh goalie Ryan Grzeszczak deflected a Michael Cipriano shot off the crossbar. The Mountain Hawks had a free kick from just outside the box with under a minute left in the first extra session, but could not convert.
