Northeastern to Host Field Hockey Championship

Northeastern (4-1 in America East, 15-3 overall) has earned the top seed in the America East Field Hockey Championship and will host the four-team championship Friday (November 8) and Sunday (November 10) at Sweeney Field.

The Huskies will meet No. 4 Vermont (2-3, 6-12) at 1 p.m. with No. 2 New Hampshire (4-1, 12-7) and No. 3 Maine (3-2, 14-3) to follow. The winners will meet on Sunday at 2 p.m. to decide the championship and the conference's autmotic bid to the NCAA Field Hockey Championship.

It marks the second-straight year the championship will be held at Sweeney Field (Directions) and fifth time overall the Huskies have hosted the championship.

Northeastern defeated Boston University, 2-1 on Saturday while New Hampshire downed Maine, 2-1, as both the Huskies and Wildcats finished with 4-1 records in America East. Northeastern defeated New Hampshire, 2-1 on October 26 at Sweeney Field to win the tie breaker.

The defending conference champion Huskies will be seeking their eighth America East Championship since 1990, the first season the conference sponsored a tournament. New Hampshire won its only America East title in 1998 with a 4-3 overtime decision over Northeastern at Hofstra Stadium. Maine and Vermont have never won America East titles.

The Huskies are making their 12th appearance in the championship in the 13-year history of the event. New Hampshire marks its first appearance since 2000 and 10th overall. Maine appears in the championship for the second-straight year and sixth time overall. Vermont is heading to the championship for the first time since 1991 and its third appearance overall.

Boston University, which appeared in each of the first 12 America East Championships and has won four titles, failed to qualify for the championship for the first time. The Terriers (2-3, 11-9) finished tied with Vermont, but dropped a 2-1 penalty-stroke decision to the Catamounts on October 25.
