Terhune, Vanin Earn Spalding Weekly Honors

Spalding Player of the Week: Sophomore guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, N.J./Warren Hills) of Boston University averaged 20.6 points and 4.3 rebounds while guiding BU to three straight victories this week. In the Terriers’ 93-77 win over Harvard, Terhune scored 20 points, hitting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line. In the first round of the Christmas City Classic, Terhune scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field in the Terriers’ 75-51 win over Delaware State. In the championship win over Lehigh, Terhune scored 22 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to guide the Terriers (4-1) to their first tournament championship since 1989. Terhune was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her efforts. The 5-foot-11 guard had led the Terriers in scoring in four of their five games, as BU is off to their best start in seven years.

Spalding Rookie of the Week: Freshman forward Francesca Vanin (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) of Northeastern University had a breakthrough week that began with an impressive 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals Nov. 23 to help lead NU to a 96-70 blowout victory over Central Connecticut State in just her second game as a Husky. On Friday night Nov. 24, the Huskies traveled to the University of Washington to take on the 21st-ranked Washington Huskies in the Seattle Times Husky Classic. Vanin had a team-high nine points and pulled down five rebounds as NU lost to the host Huskies 81-42. In Sunday’s consolation game, Vanin had 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 25 minutes of play to help the Huskies overcome a 14 point halftime deficit, only to lose in the final seconds by two points, 82-80. Vanin was named to the Seattle Times Husky Classic All-Tournament team for her outstanding play during the Thanksgiving weekend tournament.
