New Hampshire Men, Boston Women Win America East Cross Country Championships

ORONO, Maine ? Boston University sophomore Jochen Dieckfoss took the men’s individual title, while Terier senior Rachel Felton won the women’s crown at the 2001 America East Cross Country Championship, held Saturday morning in Orono, Maine. The Boston University women took home the team title while New Hampshire men came away with the men’s team championship.

For the Terrirer women, it marked their sixth straight America East title and 11th in 12 years. The New Hampshire men took back the crown they lost last year. This marks the Wildcats third America East championship.

The Boston University women took five of the top nine spots en route to 19 points. The University of New Hampshire was second with 74, followed by the University of Maine with 98 points. Newcomer, University at Albany finished fourth with 115, followed by University of Vermont (135), Stony Brook University (140), Binghamton University (213), Northeastern University (213) and University of Hartford (256).

Felton covered the 5,000-meter course in 17:11.80, 5 seconds in front of runner-up Michele Palmer (17:16.80) of Vermont. Felton’s finish places her third in America East’s Top 20 Championship Times. Boston University junior Sherida Bird was third in 17:22.40. Senior Kathryn Ireland (4th, 17:32.70), senior Jennifer Kehoe (5th, 17:43.50) and senior Lauren Matthews (6th, 17:55.70) rounded out the scoring for the Terriers.

Dieckfoss ran 24:38.40, the second fastest time in the 14-year history of the men’s championship, which is run at 8,000-meters, to lead Boston University to a runner-up finish with 50 points. University of New Hampshire won by placing three runners in the top nine spots to earn 46 points. University of Maine repeated it’s third place finish from last year with 80 points. University at Albany (90), University of Vermont (132), Stony Brook University (159), Binghamton University (169), Northeastern University (238) and University of Hartford (293) rounded out the team scoring.

New Hampshire was paced by senior Dan Hocking (2nd, 24:46.20) and sophomore James Olsen (5th, 25:11.50). Freshman Peter Mallet (7th, 25:16.80), senior Tim Wright (15th, 25:26.50) and junior Jesse Marcum (17th, 25:27.40) closed the Wildcats scoring.

Jim Boulanger of New Hampshire was named Men's Coach of the Year. Bruce Lehane of Boston University was the Women's Coach of the Year.

The America East Cross Country Championships were the first of 21 championships for the conference this year.
